Navigating to the SCAD Job Portal and Overview

  1. To get to the SCAD Job Portal, navigate to “Student Workspace” and scroll down to the box that says “Career and Alumni Success”
  1. This will direct you to the job portal; it may bring you to a survey or another page to complete your profile, but here is what it looks like starting at the home page. At the top right, the little circle is your profile, where you can add documents or edit your information. Additionally, the boxes below the blue bar are additional resources and updates you can make to your profile.
  1. Continuing into the SCAD Job Portal, at the top blue bar, select where it says “Jobs.” Here, you will get a list of all job postings on the SCAD Job Portal. You can edit them to your specific needs and click search to find them.
  1. The next shelf option says “Events.” This is a list of all events and workshops that are happening at SCAD. You can search for events or scroll through to see where and when these SCAD events are happening.
  1. The next shelf says “Employers.” This is a list of all current employers that are posting on the SCAD Job Portal and/or are in connection with SCAD. You can go here to find a specific company you are interested in to see if they have any job openings.
  1. The “Resources” shelf has a list of resources for you, such as examples of cover letters, resumes, advice on interviews, mock interviews, etc. You can come here to choose which resource you are looking for.
  1. The last shelf is “Career Advising.” Here is where you can make an appointment with your career advisor or any career advisor that has openings. You can click “Request New Appointment” to schedule a specific time to meet with an advisor. When you click that, it will bring you to a page where you can fill out what time you want to meet, what you want to meet about, how long, where to meet, etc.

Your Profile

  1. On the homepage of the Job Portal, go to the top right where you see a circle, this is your tab for your account and other information that applies to you.
  1. Click the words that say “Public Profile.” This will bring you to the page that allows you to edit your profile. Career advisors and employers see this section within the SCAD job portal when you apply for jobs. Here is an example of what a profile looks like. You can edit your profile to add your statement, experience, organizations and activities, skills, contact information, etc. At the top right is a percentage of how complete your profile is. It doesn’t need to be 100% complete for you to apply to jobs; it is simply a website suggestion.
  1. Going back to the top right of the page where the circle icon of your profile is, click it and then click the words “My Account” at the bottom.
  1. The “My Account” is where you can edit additional information about your account, such as personal information, privacy settings, etc. Filling out “Personal Information” and “Academic Profile” helps to make your profile more complete on the job portal. “Experiential Learning” is where you can add any prior experience that you may have had. Additionally, you can keep the career advisors at SCAD updated about your current employment status by filling out where you work at “Career Outcomes.”

Searching for Jobs

  1. Click the “Jobs” tab and you’ll get directed to the page where you can search for jobs. There are multiple filters that you can apply to get results specific to what you want.
  1. When you search for a specific job title, you can add a “Job Alert” to that title. This allows you to get notified about new jobs with the title you set the alert for. For example, in the image below, I searched “visual effects” and clicked search. Multiple positions popped up, and all the way to the right, there is a button that says “+ Create Job Alert.” I would click this button in order to get notified when jobs have in their description or title “visual effects.”

Saving Jobs and Applying to Jobs

  1. When you find a job that catches your eye, and you click on it, it will lead you to another page with the job’s description. The description of the jobs gives you essential information such as position, desired skills, important deadlines, etc. If you’re interested in the job but don’t want to apply yet, you can click the star on the top right to save it to your “Favorites.” If you want to apply, click the blue “Apply” button. You can also follow the company by clicking the “+” button next to the company’s name on the top left.

Events

  1. The “Events” tab takes you to a page where you can find a list of SCAD and employer events that are happening. These events range from employer visits, interviews, portfolio reviews, career workshops, etc. You can filter what you want to look for by using the search bar at the top.
  1. When you find an event that interests you, click on it and it will lead you to a page of its description. Here you can read more about it such as when it’s happening, where, etc. Additionally to attend it, click the blue button “Attend” and it will send you a confirmation email.

Employers

  1. The “Employers” tab is a page where you can see the list of employers that utilize the SCAD Job Portal. Here you are able to search for certain companies you’re interested in and can see if they have any job openings at that company.
  1. When you click a company that you’re interested in, you can see certain information such as their job listings, a description of their company, contact info, etc. You can also follow this company in order to stay updated about any new jobs or events they might be having.

Resources

  1. The resources tab has multiple resources that you can access such as ‘Career Action Plans’, ‘Content Library’, ‘Mock Interviews’, and scheduling career advising appointments. Below we will go in depth about each resource.

Career Action Plans

  1. When you click on the “Career Action Plans” box, it brings you to a page of all of the “CAS CAP” Levels. The Career Action Plan is a form of SCAD’s way to prepare you to be career ready. The Career Action Plan is optional, but SCAD recommends it because it will help you to gain more knowledge about being career ready. It will also help to lead you through tasks that you need to do to make your profile more complete.
  1. You first have to start with CAS CAP Level 1. Click the box that says that, and it will lead you to a description of that level. To start the level, there will be a button that says “START” to the right of the level. These levels lead you through from a beginner’s perspective of how to start your career readiness journey. Level One starts with basics such as adding things to your resume, attending workshops, advising appointments, etc. You can see your percentage of completeness within the level by looking at the right circle.

Content Library

  1. The “Content Library” box has a plethora of information for you to look over. The information includes example resumes, example cover letters, examples of what kind of jobs there are in your field, etc. You can search for resources if you have one in mind and you can also categorize your search.
  1. When you find a resource that you want, click it and it will lead you to a download page. Click the blue button that says “Download”. I suggest this resource, “How To: Cover Letters” as it goes through in detail how to make an interesting cover letter that employers will want to read. This resource has helped me in understanding how cover letters should be formatted.

Mock Interview

Recommended Interviews

  1. If you need to practice your interview skills, one way is to take a mock interview. The “Mock Interview” page allows you to record yourself while the computer asks you interview questions. There are two mock interviews that are 15 minutes long each that you can take. If you want to do a mock interview, click “Record New Attempt” under where it says “15 Minute Interview”. This is a method of interviewing where you are recorded and the computer asks you questions and you answer them. The recording then gets sent to a career advisor and they review how you did.
  1. When you click “Record New Attempt” it will bring you to a new page where you can begin the recording process. You have to allow the SCAD Job Portal to have access to your microphone and video in order to continue. Once you do that, test your audio and begin the process.

Customize Your Own Mock Interview

  1. If you don’t want to take SCAD’s recommended interviews on the main page, you can go to “My Mock Interviews” where you can customize the interview you will take. It is similar to the suggested ones, but you can alter it to what you want to practice most about your interview skills. Click “Create New Mock Interview” to begin customizing the interview questions. Once you do that, make sure to name your interview, then save and continue.
  1. You will then be brought to a page that has a list of specific questions from certain categories. You can pick and choose which questions you want to be asked and add them to your interview. The questions are all timed and the more you add, the longer your interview will be and vice versa.
  1. Once you click “Save And Continue” you will be brought to a page where you can choose what pre-recorded person you want to interview you. Once you’ve chosen, you can either start the interview right away, or save it for later.

Career Advising

  1. The “Career Advising” tab allows you to make an appointment with your career advisor, or show up to a “Drop In” advising. It is highly recommended that you make an appointment instead of dropping in because your career advisor is specific to your major and can help you with more detailed questions pertaining to your industry. Click “Request New Appointment” to make an appointment or “Drop In” to drop in to an available advisor.
  1. To “Drop In” select which kind of advising you would like and click continue.
  1. To make an appointment, click the “Request New Appointment” button. This will bring you to a page where you can select which days you want to meet, what time, if you want it online or in person, etc. When you’ve selected an open day, you can complete your appointment and confirm it. You will get an email notification that will confirm it.
