Why We Love Film Fest

The SCAD Savannah Film Festival: one of the most glorious times of the year. For many students, it’s the first thing that comes to mind as soon as the weather turns chillier and the days grow shorter. It’s not just a highlight of the fall quarter, but a moment whose impact carries through the entire year, and for good reason. There are too many reasons why we love Film Fest, and this article aims to unpack a few of them.

The Iconic Ticket Line.
What would Film Fest be without that ginormous line before the first schedule unveiling? Students pack bags, set up camping chairs, and come armed with snacks and drinks to secure tickets for screenings they don’t even know yet. It’s a testament not only to how trusted the lineup is year after year, but also to the unwavering passion students have for their craft.

Experiencing the Work of Our Biggest Inspirations.
One of the most exciting parts of the festival is the chance to experience the work of some of the most revered artists in the film industry and then hear directly from them. From Q&As to panels, students get to ask questions, learn about the creative process, and see the people who inspire them most up close. There’s so much to say about these opportunities, so I’ll just leave it at that.

The Passion and Excitement in the Air.
The energy during Film Fest is electric. The love that film, TV, acting, animation, and VFX students have for what they do is palpable.  At no point is there more chatter about the technicality of these arts than there is during Film Fest. As someone outside those majors, I’m always fascinated by what I’ll learn and inspired by the excitement that fills every corner of campus.

A Celebration of Student Work.
To me, the most inspiring thing about SCAD is the creativity and dedication of its students. I’m constantly amazed by the incredible projects my peers bring to life. Signature SCAD events like the annual Fashion Show, the Jewelry Trunk Show, and of course, the Film Fest, give these works a platform to be admired and to inspire.

Connecting With the Savannah Community.
Film Fest also brings the wider Savannah community together. Locals join in the excitement to see and celebrate the work of renowned actors, directors, and animators. And through student films, the beauty and culture of Savannah are reflected on screen, strengthening the bond between the city and its creative community.

These are just a few of the many reasons we love Film Fest. As the festival approaches, it’s hard to keep it out of conversation, and the excitement is undeniably contagious.
