Student Spotlight: Sydney Relkin– VSFX
Hello! I’m Sydney Relkin, and a cabinet member of the Digital Effects Club!! I am a Junior in VSFX with a minor in technical direction. I specialize in compositing, and enjoy supervising on set when given the opportunity! I have worked on 13 student films so far in my time at SCAD ranging from boom mic cleanups, to live action cg integration.
Photography and my love of Star Wars is what got me into visual effects! Since I could hold a camera, I have always had one in hand one way or another, constantly learning as much as I could. This led me to finding joy in manipulating photos that I took and turning them into what I now know are matte paintings! One of the things I enjoy about convincing visual effects are ones that are grounded in reality; that we take our experiences and use it to imagine imagery beyond our wildest dreams. What makes every project I’ve worked on so special is that no matter what there’s always a new problem to be solved.
As visual effects artists we are always learning and that is such a rare thing, yes software changes and you have to learn when there are updates, but the ability to figure out new ways to go about different things just excites me to no end.
