Luck: Movie Review
The recent animated film by Skydance Animation Studios titled “Luck” was released this past August by Apple TV. This movie is about a girl who is an orphan and just turned 18, so she has to move out of the home she is currently in. She never had the chance to get adopted by a family, but she hopes her friend from the orphanage does. She has very bad luck, but through a series of unfortunate events, she finds herself in a world of “luck” with a black cat. The story progresses from there and brings you into this new “luck” world.
Overall my thoughts about the movie are that it was cute. I think it was a bit cliche and predictable, but the overall concept was cute. It was a bit boring at times for me personally, but I think for little kids they would be excited about this movie. I think the film definitely leans more toward a younger audience. The storyline seemed to drag on a bit, but I thought it ended pretty well. The movie is typical: the heroine has a talking animal pal, and one doesn’t like the other, but over the course of the story, they become really good friends who solve the problem together.
On the animation and visual side of things, I thought the execution was done pretty well. It’s fun to watch movies after learning about visual effects for so long because while I was watching Luck, I kept looking at the eyes to see the eye highlights and reflections. The movie’s color scheme was done well; green for good luck and purple for bad luck. The world of “luck” was an interesting concept. In the first scene, when the main character is taking her first steps into this “luck” world, there are forms of transportation that I thought was pretty neat. Since it’s a world of “luck,” the people who live in this world don’t worry about any accidents happening. For example, there is a form of transportation where they walk off the edge of a high building, but don’t even look to see if a platform is coming to carry them over because it’s a world of “luck,” so there’s no need to worry about falling. The creation of these transportation methods was done well, and the animation of them moving around made things in this “luck” world look very seamless and smooth. The creation of the world and its concept overall, I thought, was done very well.
If you’re looking for a cute and silly movie to watch but don’t feel like a Disney movie, then I recommend watching Luck. It has a very predictable storyline, but it’s a nice heartwarming movie to watch. This movie is available on Apple TV, so give it a watch!
