Peer Tutoring: A Valuable Resource SCAD Offers

Interview with Elyse Resseguie

Have you ever got stumped with a project and tried to get help from your professor, but their office hours were booked? Being at a loss with projects or programs is all part of the learning process here at SCAD, but there are resources besides your professors that can help you with specific tasks. SCAD has peer tutoring, and specifically, in Monty, there is peer tutoring for the digital media majors. In an interview with a current visual effects peer tutor, Elyse Resseguie, she talks about all the details you need to know about peer tutoring for the Monty majors.

What is SCAD Peer Tutoring?

I think it’s a great dynamic between students because they gain another perspective of learning. Students have a lot of different learning types, and Peer Tutoring can help cater to individual needs. AndI think it serves as a tool for students to make connections with each other. It also helps the peer tutors as well to further their learning. For example, in order for me to teach other students I have to go back and revisit and review my work to know the material enough to teach it to somebody else.

How or why did you decide to become a peer tutor?

I personally enjoy teaching. Before I was a peer tutor, I was a book buddy, which is another job you can do at SCAD that I think is really cool. A little side note, book buddies, is a job that you can do in the community. Through SCAD you work at a local elementary school as a teacher’s assistant. I had some excellent teaching experience here, but I wanted to do something more relevant to visual effects. Therefore, I decided that it would be a good fit to be a peer tutor. A lot of the senior peer tutors are my friends so it’s like a small community.

What kind of things do you peer tutor?

I am mainly a Houdini and programming tutor. I teach Houdini, Python and C++. I do some general Maya stuff and Photoshop too.

How do you sign up for peer tutoring?

Usually, someone schedules a time slot online through the peer tutoring website. I have specific time slots available. If someone doesn’t have availability when I’m able to tutor, they can email me, and I can set up a different time to meet. First, they put down what they want to get tutored for. Then I email them to connect and see if it’s in person or Zoom. In addition, through this email, we talk about what they want to go over. Then I mentally think about what I would be teaching. You don’t usually do a lot of pre-planning; you just come in and do a little bit of one-on-one learning.

Why do you think people should utilize this resource?

I think it’s a great way to connect with students since SCAD has been online for so long. Before SCAD was online, I remember being in some of my lower level 200 classes, and 400 level students would come around while their stuff was rendering during finals. They would say, “oh hey, here are some tips for you,” and I remember that being a great community.

SCAD Peer Tutoring is a free valuable resource available to all students. Not only are there peer tutors for the Monty majors, there are also peer tutors for other things such as writing, art history, chinese, architecture, etc. If you would like to sign up for peer tutoring, click the link or follow the instructions below:
