5 Key Features in Unreal Engine 5

I’m sure that we are all eagerly awaiting the release of Unreal Engine 5 which according to Epic Games, is set to drop early 2022. The real-time gaming engine which has found an important use in virtual with productions such as The Mandalorian continues to improve upon itself. Artists will be able to use the Unreal Engine to create vast open world games as well as utilizing it’s virtual production capabilities.  The engine is currently in early access, but it would be important to highlight the key features that will all help us achieve our creative goals. Here are the six most important features given from EpicGames.com:

1.    Nanite

Nanite will allow users to create unprecedented levels of quality with millions of polygons that can be imported with film quality source assets. You will be able to create this high level of detail while maintaining real-time frame rates.

2.    Metahumans

According to unrealengine.com, the MetaHuman Creator is “a cloud-streamed app that takes real-time digital human creation from weeks or even months to less than an hour-at an unprecedented standard of quality, fidelity, and realism.” I know that this feature is really going to make life easier for a game developer.

3.    MetaSounds

MetaSounds will give users control over audio DSP graph generation of sound sources.

4.    Open Worlds

Unreal Engine 5 will be bringing changes that should help developers create open world environments including dividing the world into a grid and streaming the necessary cells automatically.

5.    Lumen

Epic Games describes Lumen as “a fully global illumination solution that lets users create dynamic, believable scenes.” Developers will be able to create and edit lights inside the Unreal Editor and see the same final lighting as when the game is run on console.

We are already seeing the incorporation of the Unreal Engine into filmmaking with its incorporation into The Mandalorian. The release of the Unreal 5 will hopefully not only advance the creation of video games but will also improve filmmaking as well.
