SCAD Film Fest 2019: Student Shorts: Block A
The atmosphere was infectious as guests and SCAD students, current and past, sat down to watch the eclectic selection of student shorts on display at the annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival 2019 in the Student Shorts: Block A section.
The films screened were Balloon, directed by Jeremy Merrifield, about a bullied kid at school who realizes that he has superpowers; November 1st, a drama from English director Charlie Manton about an aging mother’s journey to witness the execution of the person who murdered her son, and “Hors de l’eau,” an animation/live-action film from France about macaque monkeys fighting for resources in the snowy wilderness.
The local SCAD films represented were Godspeed, an animation film from recent graduate Sunny Wai Yan Chan about a boy saying goodbye to his mother at the airport; Small Mercy, a film directed by Olivia O’Hara about a daughter in an abusive relationship with her father; and I Do Not Sleep, a film from director Beppy Gietema about two sisters grieving over a dead sibling. In the Q&A after the screenings, Gietema stated that the idea came to her when she was driving to LaGuardia airport and imagined a movie about a rotting boy in a Victorian house.
The student shorts on display represented a truly diverse range of characters, mediums, and stories from schools not only in the United States but from around the world.
The SCAD Savannah Film Festival is an annual film festival hosted by The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. This year it runs from October 26 to November 2, 2019.
